Tom Jackson named 2007 Juno Humanitarian

FEATURED STORY: TOM JACKSON NAMED 2007 JUNO HUMANITARIAN

Tom Jackson is recognized in Canada as much for his charity work as for his music and acting. So it's no surprise that he's the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) 2007 JUNO Humanitarian Award recipient, an award dedicated to making a positive difference in Canada's social structure.

Jackson's career combines his love for entertainment and his determination to end hunger. "I am proud and humbled to be part of a community that acknowledges music as a vehicle of change," says Jackson.

Jackson launched the Huron Carole Concert Tour in 1987 and continues the commitment with Singing for Supper, raising food and money for Canadian food banks. He also hosts the Dreamcatcher Concert Tour, educating communities about suicide. His efforts have helped raise over $9 million for the less fortunate.

The award will be presented during The JUNO Gala Dinner and Awards on March 31st in Saskatoon.

FEATURED ARTIST: JOSH RITTER

This 29-year-old singer-songwriter didn't come from a musical background (his parents are neuroscientists), but with folk singers echoing in his head, Josh Ritter decided to strike out on a different track. Ritter's earnest style is reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen and Leonard Cohen. After wrapping his European and North American tour, Ritter's back with The Animal Years, which marks a departure from the traditional view of folk-based storytelling. Opening track, "Girl in the War," eloquently opines on the Middle East conflict, while "Wolves" experiments with an electronic flare and the barebones "Idaho" haunts with Ritter's voice, a guitar and the hum of an empty room.

Ritter stopped by The Late Show With David Letterman on January 12th before taking his acoustic show on the road. He will perform 25 shows in two months, visiting Chicago, Vancouver, Toronto and Los Angeles, among others, and playing sold out shows in New York, Boston, Alexandria, Westport and Philadelphia.

To see Ritter's performance on The Late Show, visit CBS' website.

DobaCaracol

Since 1998, DobaCaracol has been enchanting international audiences with a sound that's been described as "a mixture of earth and air, textured atmospheres with a strong feminine touch." Their unique style, a fusion of traditional world beats with a modern, organic edge, vaulted them onto the world stage, where they've played alongside international artists, including a performance at Live 8. In 2004, they signed with Montreal's hottest independent label, Indica Records.

The Higgins

A life-altering accident changed the future for this contemporary country family act (siblings John, Eileen and Kathleen) and they haven't looked back since. With eclectic musical influences (country, classic rock and Celtic) the Higgins have forged themselves into an engagingly unmistakable sound that's making them a favourite everywhere from small town theatres to sold out festivals in China.

T.O.F.U.

With two National Poetry Slam Individual Grand Slam Champions in their line-up, Tons of Fun University (T.O.F.U.) is no stranger to the spotlight. Since blasting onto the scene at the 2004 Vancouver Folk Music Festival, this west coast talk-rock trio have shared the stage with everyone from Corb Lund to Bruce Cockburn. Their blend of "political with a comic edge" rhymes, rhythm and storytelling are thought-provoking and entertaining.
