FEATURED STORY: THE BACKYARDIGANS
The Backyardigans embarked on their first Canadian tour in January '08 with their brand new musical theatre performance! The Backyardigans: Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens, produced by KOBA Family Entertainment, is a 90-minute production that is a musical adventure for children of all ages!
For the Backyardigans gang, daily backyard play dates bring fantasy to life while the musical adventures encourage kids to express themselves creatively. The Backyardigans: Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens includes songs, dances and music like no other stage production; each episode of the show has its own musical style, from Reggae and Hip Hop to Jazz and Rockabilly. The five, high-spirited friends - Pablo, Tyrone, Uniqua, Tasha and Austin - along with a never ending imagination, will travel to shivering Frozen Toes Mountain, the blistering Hot Footsy Desert, and the volcanic Lost Pirate Island!
The CGI-animated television show was first introduced in 2004 from Nelvana and Nick Jr. and has since acquired both an Emmy Award and a Gemini. It is seen in over 40 countries worldwide and brings in upwards of one million viewers (per episode) in North America alone.

The Duhks
The Duhks' blend of soul, gospel, North American folk, Brazilian samba, old time country string band, zydeco, and Irish dance music, and the attack they bring to these interwoven acoustic styles, might as well be called sheer rock and roll. Since their debut, Your Daughters & Your Sons, to their Bela Fleck-produced self-titled album, and most recently Migrations, the band has won admirers as diverse as David Crosby, Dolly Parton, and Doc Watson. This Grammy-nominated band creates the most vital acoustic music being made today, as it acknowledges its predecessors and lives in the here and now.

House of Doc
Infusing musical inspirations such as Gordon Lightfoot, Simon & Garfunkel & Spirit of the West with intricate harmonies, sophisticated counterpoint and a rocking, down-home delivery, House of Doc has captured its story with a rich and sensitive attention to detail. Their latest effort, East of West, makes it very clear that House of Doc are out to revamp Folk music.

Lau
Described as the union of three of the finest and most innovative exponents of modern traditional music in Scotland today, Lau is Kris Drever (guitar and vocal), Martin Green (piano accordion) and Aidan O'Rourke (fiddle). Having already taken festivals across Europe and North-American by storm and a Japanese tour this winter, Lau has become the centre of a world-wide party.

DID WE MENTION?
- After a four-week European tour with The National, Hayden is keeping busy with his latest CD release, In Field & Town (Hardwood), which debuted at #3 on iTunes. Hayden is back on the road for his cross-Canada tour, which started in Hamilton with label-mate, Basia Bulat, who will be on the road for the eastern leg. And in western Canada, Jenn Grant will join Hayden for six dates. Check out Hayden's website for a full list of tour dates.
- MSN.com recently featured 19 top Canadian musicians in its article, "Woah, Canada!" which included The Be Good Tanyas and The Wailin' Jennys. The Vancouver-based Tanya's are described as, "the vanguard of modern musicians marrying "old timey" acoustic styles with a postpunk sensibility." Canada's music invasion is alive and well.
- After a much ferociously anxious wait for Tokyo Police Club fans, the boys are back! Following on one of the most well-received 16-minutes of music in recent history, A Lesson In Crime, Tokyo Police Club have just completed their first full-length album, Elephant Shell, which is due out late April on Saddle Creek in North America and Memphis Industries in the UK. In the meantime, the gentlemen of TPC can be caught on the road and playing all across North America from Toronto to Montreal and New York to Orlando. Check out the tour schedule on MySpace.
- Tony Dekker of Toronto's Great Lake Swimmers has recently finished his music score for 10-time Emmy-award winner, Greg Kohs' documentary, Song Sung Blue. Kohs' full-length feature film debut follows the love story and career of Mike and Claire Sardina, the Milwaukee husband and wife comprising Neil Diamond tribute singing act Lightning & Thunder. The documentary, which includes Dekker covering Diamond's 1972 chart-topping song, "Song Sung Blue" in the closing credits, premiered on January 20th at the 14th annual Slamdance Film Festival, in Park City, Utah.
- Josh Ritter graced the set of The Late Show with David Letterman last week. Sitting comfortably at #4 on New York Daily News' Top 10 CDs of 2007, Josh Ritter performed "To The Dogs Or Whoever" off of his latest album, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter. Catch Josh's performance here and look out for him on the road come February!
- Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett) received a benevolent pat-on-the-back by karma when he decided not to sue a Vienna-based company for using his track, "This Is the Dream of Win & Regine", in one of their commercials without permission. Recently, said-company graciously approached the artist and offered to finance a festival co-curated by Pallett. As a result, London, Vienna and Berlin will all be treated to Pallett's Maximum Black Festival, which boasts a million dollar line up: Dirty Projectors, Frog Eyes, Six Organs of Admittance, Deerhoof and of course Final Fantasy. The festival begins in London on February 27th, 2008.
