About
Fradique and António Mendes Ferreira were born in São Tomé and Príncipe, respectively. With the same mixed heritage that characterizes the São Tomé people, they are descendants of Cape Verdeans,Portuguese, and Angolans, carrying a diverse cultural legacy that led them to a passion for music. They attended primary school in São João dos Angolares, the capital of the Caué district, where they were part of the choir group of the Church of Santa Cruz dos Angolares.
In 2009, they sought a shorter name with a better meaning, and the one mutually chosen was Calema. Calema means a special wave on the African coast, like the waves that, when they reach the shore, always bring something with them. The Calema bring: music, smiles, emotions, culture, and the São Tomé sun.
From a very young age, they participated in several contests, winning Lusartist, and where they began working on their debut album“ Bomu Kêlê” (Let's believe in Creole). The album is full of surprises in both Creole and Portuguese, where the Calema challenged themselves by composing all the tracks. These two young men surprise with the blend of their crystal-clear voices, pure voices, and powerful voices.
Wherever they go, they stand out. With their natural charm and charismatic energies they are sometimes referred to as the "Calema angels."
