About
When it comes to describing Half Moon Run, the word that keeps coming up is “complex.” The Guardian, Exclaim! or even fans, many attach this label to the Montreal team. Whether we associate them with alternative pop, bucolic folk or even psychedelic indie rock, the three multi-instrumentalists - Devon Portielje (vocals, guitar, piano, percussion), Conner Molander (vocals, guitar, keyboard, piano, “pedal steel”, bass, harmonica) and Dylan Phillips (vocals, drums, piano, keyboard) – build their reputation on arrangements and harmonies that are as spiritual as they are funambulistic. Compositions that ring beautifully in our ears before completely taking over our beings.
Two singles from Dark Eyes (Disques Indica, 2012) reached the BBC Radio 1 A list before this debut album was certified Platinum in Canada. Enough to attract the attention of the prestigious American magazine Rolling Stone which mentions Half Moon Run as a “band to watch”. With Sun Leads Me On (Glassnote Records, 2015), the quartet toured Europe and North America via Australia, then obtained Gold certification in Canada for this second album. In Quebec, Half Moon Run benefits from an exceptional aura as evidenced by the Félix “Album or Show of the Year – Other Interpretation” (2013), “Quebec artist having achieved the most success outside Quebec” (2016) and “ Show of the year – Anglophone” (2017) won at the ADISQ galas. Fall 2019 saw the release of the band's third opus, A Blemish in the Great Light, which was awarded the Juno Prize for “Adult Alternative Album of the Year” the following year. It was during this year 2020 that the EP Seasons of Change and the pandemic album The Covideo Sessions were released. Returning to its basic trio after the departure of Isaac Symonds, Half Moon Run does not procrastinate in composing and recording Inwards & Onwards (2021), an EP entirely produced by the members of the group and a beacon of a new takeoff.
